Our last morning in Tehachapi consisted of many more cups of coffee and bittersweet goodbyes. We both agreed on one final stop at Kohnen’s Country Bakery for the best damn almond croissant I’ve ever tasted and one more apple Danish (not proud). DuPont and Llama also joined us at the bakery, and a woman stopped them outside of the entrance to wish them good luck on their hike and to pay for their breakfast. While she was unbelievably kind, I can’t help but mention one minor detail: she held their hands and gave them each a full blessing (neither one of them seems to be very religious), then proceeded to tell DuPont that she “could feel the fire inside of him.” He was a little thrown off by it all, and commented to us, “I mean, I was feeling somethin’—but I’m not sure if it was fire or the whiskey from last night.”

We said goodbye a few times too many, then rode out of Tehachapi toward Boron for the easiest 50-mile ride yet. The entire road was downhill, and the wind was at our backs. When we showed up, however, we discovered what seemed to be a ghost town. Luckily, the “Borax Capital of the World” had a small Super K, where the cashier directed us toward an RV park across the road where we could camp. We bought chips, salsa, and beer for “dinner”, and purchased a patch of grass for the night. The rest of the evening was quite windy and lazy—and that’s about all there was to it.
